After watching Schofield 18-0, 12 KOs) turn his back on Giron (20-4, 13 KOs) in the third round and almost getting brained to the back of the head, WBC lightweight champion Shakur said on X, “Food.” He also said that Schofield is lucky that Giron didn’t “clip” him when he turned his back to him and walked away during the middle of an exchange in round three.

Giron later knocked Schofield down with a big left hook in round 11. Shakur saw that, too, and he’s got to be feeling confident about his chances of winning a fight against Schofield. Floyd Sr said at the post-fight press conference that Shakur needs to fight Kid Austin.

Schofield won tonight by a 12-round unanimous decision. The scores were 118-109, 116-11 and 118-109.

“Now that he showed that he’s vulnerable, it’ll give them the courage to step in the ring,” said Floyd Schofield Sr. to the media about his son, ‘Kid Austin.’, looking beatable against Rene Tellez Giron on Saturday night.

Scholfield Jr. and his dad can talk all they want about getting a fight against Shakur Stevenson for his WBC lightweight title, but it’s not happening. He’s already going to be defending his belt against #1 contender William Zepeda on February 22nd, provided the Mexican contender defeats Tevin Farmer on November 16th.

If Zepeda beats Shakur, there won’t be much interest in a fight against Schofield. Shakur would be trying to rebuild and might even move up to 140, depending on how badly Zepeda beats him.

“In my opinion, Shakur ain’t got no power like Rene. So, I’m ready,” said Schofield Jr. “I felt that after he caught me with the knockdown, I thought, ‘You know what? I want this to go the whole 12 rounds,’ because I wanted to give the fans what they wanted to see. I was fine.

“After the knockdown, I thought, ‘You know what? Let’s bang it out the whole fight,” said Schofield.

Shakur doesn’t have much power. He’s a defensive guy that does this and then dashes away. He doesn’t possess the offensive game to stand and fight someone like Schofield or any of the young contenders. If Shakur fought Raymond Muratalla and tried to actually fight him, he’d get destroyed.

“Shakur is one of the greatest. That’s why we want to fight him and Tank,” said Schofield Sr. “Shakur needs someone exciting like Kid. If Shakur keeps getting boring fights, his brain is going to keep going down. He needs Kid, Pitbull, and Tank. He needs those aggressive fighters.”
