Hartarto, Chinese ambassador discuss economic ties

Jakarta (ANTARA) –
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia, Wang Lutong, discussed the future and performance of bilateral economic and trade cooperation during a meeting at Hartarto’s office in Jakarta on Tuesday.

They also touched upon Indonesia and China’s Two Countries Twin Parks initiative, which aims to promote bilateral cooperation in the development of industrial parks.

“This cooperation can be oriented toward developing high-tech industries, such as the manufacturing of electric vehicles and semiconductors in special economic zones (SEZ),” Hartarto said, according to a statement released by his ministry here on Wednesday.

He highlighted that Chinese automotive company BYD has expressed interest in parking its capital in Patimban and Subang special economic zones (SEZs) in Subang district, West Java.

He also welcomed the proposal for cooperation in the blue economy put forward by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.

“Such cooperation is expected to step up the economic cooperation between Indonesian and Chinese private actors in the field of industry, downstreaming of marine products, energy, tourism, and biomedical,” he said.

The coordinating minister also shared updates on the performance of the Indonesia-China economic cooperation, saying that China is one of Indonesia’s most important economic partners.

He said that their harmonious bilateral trade ties are reflected in the fact that the total value of Chinese investments in Indonesia in January–September 2024 was the third-highest on record.

Moreover, China has proved to be Indonesia’s most valuable partner in trade in the last decade, he noted.

Ambassador Wang, on his part, conveyed his support for the acceleration of talks between Indonesia and China on the potential for blue economic cooperation.

He expressed the hope that Jakarta and Beijing will reach an agreement on the cooperation when Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visits China next week.
