Engine fire sparks panic on Trigana Air flight as take-off aborted

Sentani, Papua (ANTARA) – A Trigana Air jetliner on Tuesday aborted take-off at Sentani International Airport in Jayapura, Papua, due to an engine fire, resulting in passengers being hurt during a hasty evacuation of the plane.

Sentani Airport’s stakeholder relations department head, Surya Eka, stated that four out of 121 passengers aboard Trigana Air flight 237 bound for Wamena in Highland Papua were injured in the incident that occurred at 11:21 a.m. local time (UTC +9).

“There are no fatalities in the incident, but some passengers were injured,” Eka remarked, adding that the injuries occurred when passengers scrambled to exit the plane through emergency doors.

The passengers suffered only minor injuries and have received medical care at the airport health and quarantine facility. Nonetheless, the flight was cancelled due to the incident, he noted.

He revealed that the Sentani Airport authority and Trigana Air company await the investigation report from the National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) regarding the engine fire in the Boeing 737-500 jet.

“Activities at Sentani International Airport have resumed to normal despite the Trigana Air incident,” Eka stated.

Meanwhile, Trigana Air’s area manager for Papua, Irwan Rohendi, said as the flight was cancelled due to the incident, the company has transferred the passengers to other flights.

“Some passengers have been flown to Wamena this afternoon, while the others will be flown tomorrow (on Wednesday),” Rohendi remarked.

He confirmed that the injuries were caused by passengers rushing to evacuate the plane after seeing one of the plane’s engines catch fire. One of the injured passengers suffered from sprained limbs, he added.
