RI, UK stress commitment to address climate, nature crises

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized their commitment to addressing the climate and nature crises during a meeting in London on Thursday.

In a joint statement released after the meeting, the leaders underscored their dedication to keeping the 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature goal within reach, including through the submission of ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by February 2025.

The two leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to accelerating funding disbursement through the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to support Indonesia’s net-zero target.

“Indonesia welcomes the UK’s support for its green transition. We look forward to deepening our cooperation on sustainable infrastructure, building on our shared record of leveraging green infrastructure to drive sustainable growth,” the joint statement read.

Additionally, they agreed to establish a high-level policy dialogue on carbon pricing design and implementation, aimed at supporting the development of Indonesia’s carbon finance market and driving its green transition.

“We reaffirmed the importance of our partnership in protecting forests and combating marine degradation, both to reduce emissions and protect the environment while supporting livelihoods,” the statement continued.

The two leaders also reiterated their commitment to accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals, including disaster risk management, a low-carbon economy, and narrowing gaps in the digital and technology industries.

As part of his diplomatic tour, President Prabowo arrived in London on Wednesday at the invitation of King Charles III.

The President had previously visited China, the United States, Peru for the 2024 APEC Summit in Lima, and Brazil for the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
