Jakarta BPBD prepares boat fleet to transport voters through flood

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Jakarta city Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) mobilized 17 boats, comprising 10 plastic or polyethylene (PE) boats and seven rubber boats, to prepare for potential flooding en route to polling stations during the upcoming regional election.

“We have prepared several boats for it,” head of the task force of Jakarta BPBD for West Jakarta, Vitus Dwi Indarto, stated on Thursday.

Speaking in connection with the need for the boats, his side has coordinated with the West Jakarta General Election Commission (KPU), especially in polling stations prone to flooding.

Indarto remarked that polling stations inundated during the 2024 presidential election may be moved in the 2024 regional election while cautioning that the route for residents to the polling stations is not necessarily safe from flooding.

“The KPU said the polling stations are safe. However, we need to secure the route to the polling stations,” he stated.

The 10 PE boats were placed specifically in flood-prone areas such as North Kembangan, South Kembangan, South Sukabumi, Kamal, Tegal Alur, Duri Kosambi, Rawa Buaya, Kedaung Kali Angke, South Kedoya, and North Kedoya.

Meanwhile, seven additional rubber boats were deployed in Rawa Buaya, South Kembangan, Kedaung Kali Angke, Tegal Alur, and Duri Kosambi.

The BPBD has also set up posts in 56 villages in West Jakarta alongside the KPU posts.

Earlier, the West Jakarta KPU reported that 74 polling stations prone to flooding in West Jakarta were no longer used for the regional election on November 27.

Out of 7,169 TPS used for the presidential election in West Jakarta, only 3,452 will be used for the regional election.

The flood-prone TPS are mainly located in the sub-districts of Cengkareng, Kebon Jeruk, Palmerah, and Kembangan.
